Ton Ange Gardien SOS GPS watch has a fall detection feature that we can activate on demand. No extra cost !
Keep in mind that this is not a 100% reliable function for the moment ! Our tests show between 80 et 90% of success with detecting real falls, with some false positives and negatives ! It is not perfect, not any device in the market is, even if it is advertised as so ! We want to be honest with you !
The way fall detection devices work is by detecting a sudden vertical mouvement with an accelerometer, followed by no mouvement at all for a small period! In the beginning, we had too much false positifs and négatifs ! When seniors fall, it is not a high energy accident, and the device detects nothing many times. And as most accidents are painful, people move because of pain (or in case of epilepsy) and there is no rest period after the fall to trigger the alert ! This algorithm only functions with a fall and loss of consciousness, but it’s the way most devices function !
Our experience shows that in more than 99% of cases of fall, or illness, the wearer is able to press the SOS button himself, or someone else is present to do it for him ! Cases of massive stroke, cardiac arrest or loss of consciousness, while alone, are hopefully rare !
We are still working on through, as this is a really life-saving function for these cases.
The way we implemented this feature is by detecting only the fall. We programmed the sensibility to be a good compromise between false positifs(detecting falls that aren’t) and false négatifs (not detecting real falls). When the fall is a real one, let the watch call the designed person, and if this is a false detection, you have some secondes to touch the screen and cancel the call ! For us, that gives good,usable results, but not perfect ones. As we’ve said before, we want to be honest with you ! That’s why we implement the option only when asked, without extra cost and if you think it isn’t functioning as desired, we can take it out !
